I can’t say I’ve ever taken a class quite like my Web Technologies graduate class. I’ve learned so much and been introduced to such new concepts that it’s hard to believe this class was only 7 weeks long. It’s almost funny taking a class and knowing that the things you learn here are going to leave such a big impact on your life. Every module I entered I knew that I would be using the skills I learned here in the future and these exact skills would make me so much more desirable on the job market. I can honestly say I’ve never taken a class with so much real world application attached to it.
I’ll admit going into this class I was intimidated. I thought there was going to be a lot of math I was going to have to do? Not sure why I had that idea exactly, but I was happy to find that there was minimal math involved! I was so afraid that this class was expecting me to already be a coding pro and already have a really steady foundation in it. Thankfully that wasn’t the case, each module explained the basics thoroughly and held my hand through each of the steps. I really enjoyed how each of the modules was laid out, I learned a lot in each of them and they were very self explanatory. I never felt like I was out of my depth and I knew that my professor and my classmates were an easy resources to reach out to when I felt too lost.
I think the best thing I got out of this class was my website. I had pretty much accepted that my website was always going to look like the basic pre-set Wordpess template and nothing could change that. But now I am able to take my website and infuse it with my personality and style. Finally I have a product that reflects who I really am, and when I send my link out to employers they can see that too. My favorite feature is the twitter feed I have on the side of my website, it’s connected to a twitter that posts about dogs everyday. I also really enjoy that now my website has easy to find links to my other social media pages, I never realized that was something I was missing but I’m glad that it’s here now.
Aside from my website I like how confident this class has made me. I feel a sense of pride every time I look at my resume and see the HTML listed under my skills section. I always thought coding was something for other, smarter people to do, never for me to do. But now I feel a new confidence in my ability to say that yeah, I am one of those people that can code! And maybe if I can do something I never thought I could do, like coding, that I can do anything! Like math! Really difficult math… like calculus! Okay, maybe I’m getting a little ahead of myself there. But maybe if I had a calculus class as easy to understand as my coding class I could get there one day.
